Quotation Marks

Change all single quotation marks ('…') to double quotation marks ("…") except for those in references or if the single quotation marks are within a quote. At proof stage, watch for "inverted" quotation marks (closing quotes at the beginning of a quoted phrase and open quotes at the end) as a printer error that occurs with some frequency.

Specific terms may be used within quotation marks at the first mention by the author; all subsequent usage of the term does not require quotation marks.

Block Quotes

You may choose to use a block quotation for quotes longer than four typewritten lines or at the beginning of an article.

Using the Toolkit

Insert the «quote» and «/quote» codes at the beginning and end of the quoted text, as follows:

«quote»"In the her seminal work with chimpanzees, Jane Goodall was able to correct many of the misconceptions regarding our primate cousins. Historically, chimps had been thought of as passive, gentle animals, living together in small kinship groups at the mercy of predators. However, due to Goodall's observations, chimps are now seen to be closer in behavior to humans: capable of brutality and compassion as well as defending themselves or others."«/quote»

If the text after the quoted section does not begin a new paragraph, remember to use the «f» code so that the text begins flush left.
