Formatting APS Journal Articles :: Footnotes
Footnotes should be used only for material that cannot be incorporated elsewhere. Abbreviations, manufacturers, and gifts of materials should be incorporated into the text of the article.
Type the «fnc*» code to call out footnotes in the text, where the asterisk is the number of the footnote. For example, the callout for footnote 1 is «fnc1»1. Then, superscript the information. If multiple footnotes are cited, then a comma is placed between the numbers. For example, a sentence would be formatted as follows:
There are no such things as ghosts.«fnc1»1,«fnc2»2
Footnotes must be presented in numerical order.
If a footnote contains displayed equations, run the equation into the text whenever possible to conserve space.
The footnote itself in the text of the article may be located on the Title page as well as in the rest of the article. If more than one type of footnote is present on the first page, place them in the following order: equal contributions footnote, deceased author footnote, contact information footnote, and then numbered footnotes in text.
