Appendix

The Appendix describes information that the authors consider important but is sometimes too distracting, complex, or even too well known to be put in the main text. Many times, the Appendix details sets of equations used to construct a mathematical model. Unlike Glossaries, if the author has not included an Appendix, do not attempt to construct one yourself as it is probably not necessary.

Basic Information

The Appendix is placed at the end of the Discussion section before the Acknowledgements. At proof stage, there is a thin solid line separating the Appendix from the Acknowledgements.

Title the Appendix with the word "Appendix" as a level 1 header.

If there is more than one Appendix, these are designated as Appendix A, Appendix B, Appendix C, etc., as level 1 headers. Multiple Appendixes must be cited in the text in consecutive, alphabetical order.

Sometimes the author gives the Appendix a title (for example, Appendix A: How Bees Fly). In this case, the title is also part of the level 1 header. If the title is used as a level 2 or even level 3 header, then code it as a level 2 or 3 header accordingly.

A table, figure, or Glossary cannot be used as an Appendix. However, specific tables, figures, or the Glossary may be cited in the Appendix. Tables and figures that are part of the Appendix are designated as Table/Fig. A1, Table/Fig. A2, Table/Fig. A3, etc. If the author uses a table/figure as the Appendix, change the citation for the Appendix in the text to that of the new, properly numbered table/figure. It may be necessary for you to renumber tables/figures to keep them cited in their proper numerical order.

Using the Toolkit

Use the «app» code to designate the beginning of the Appendix.

Title the Appendix with a level 1 header.

All other titles/subheaders should be coded accordingly as level 2 or 3 headers. Paragraph breaks are indicated with the «p» code, equations are indicated using the letters ZZZ, and flush text is marked with the «f» code.

End the Appendix with the «/app» code.

«h2»The Flying Spaghetti Monster«/h2»

The Flying Spaghetti Monster was created in protest of the Kansas Board of Education's decision to give the concept of intelligent design equal teaching time as the concept of evolution. In an open letter, founder Bobby Henderson demonstrated that belief in a Flying Spaghetti Monster met all the qualifications set forth in the principles of Intelligent Design and demanded that Flying Spaghetti Monsterism be taught equally with intelligent design theory. Tenets of Henderson's new religion, followed by self-described Pastafarians, include a belief that an invisible and undetectable flying monster made of spaghetti created the universe, that all evidence supporting evolution was planted by this being, and that all natural disasters are the result of a decrease in the number of pirates (complete with a helpful graph)…

«h3»Pirates have been romanticized.«/h3» Who doesn't want the adventure, romance, exploration, and wealth synonymous with piracy? But the reality of pirate life was very different from its depiction in popular culture. Brutal conditions, poor health, and poverty were faced by most pirates, and instead of choosing a life of daring-do, they were usually kidnapped or pressed into service when onboard the ships…
