Formatting APS Journal Articles :: Title Page
The running head is a shortened version of the title of the paper. At proof stage, it is found on the top of all pages except the first page of an article. Mainly, this is decoration for the article, providing information at a glance for people who happen to leaf through the journal.
The author must provide a running head. If the running head is exceptionally long (over 70 characters) or not present, query the author.
The running head should be in all caps in roman font. At times, however, there may be terms or abbreviations listed that use lowercase letters (i.e., Ca2+). At manuscript stage, these lowercase letters remain lowercase. When you receive the proof, Cadmus should have changed all lowercase letters to small caps (i.e., Ca2+).
Use the «short» code to begin the running head.
The Toolkit will automatically change lowercase Greek letters to uppercase Greek letters; you should manually change them back to lowercase letters. The Toolkit will also automatically any label ("running head," "running title," or "short title," etc.) that the author has included. The Toolkit will recognize most label wordings, but take note if the author has used an unusual wording; Tooklit may not catch it. You should delete the label manually in such a case.
