Appendixes usually contain data that cannot easily be presented in text without interrupting its flow but that are too central to the article to be deposited in NAPS or other repositories of $$$supplementary materials. In APS journals, Appendixes frequently comprise equations, explaining in detail mathematical methods used in the experiment.
Appendixes are placed at the end of the discussion section, before the acknowledgments. If there is only one appendix, it is designated "Appendix"; do not add a letter (i.e., "Appendix A"). In text, refer to "the Appendix." Multiple appendixes are designated Appendix A, Appendix B, Appendix C, etc. They must be cited in text in consecutive order (A, B, C, etc.) but are not flagged in the margin. If the appendix is divided into lettered parts (e.g., A and B), the appendix must be labeled "Appendix 1," so that the parts are referred to as "Appendix 1, A" and "Appendix 1, B."
Text size is 9/10, same as acknowledgments.
The heading for the appendix section is a level 1 heading.
If a colon and a title follow the heading, the title is also part of the level 1 heading. However, if the title is typed as a level 2 heading under the word "Appendix" in the author's manuscript, leave it as-is.
Most appendixes are text and frequently include displayed equations, which, if numbered, should be numbered with the letter of the Appendix bumped to an Arabic numeral: (A1), (A2), (B1), (B2), etc. Note both letter and number are italic. If there is only one Appendix, label the equations (A1), (A2), etc.
Following is an example excerpted from an article by Chow JW and Darling WC (see full text). Note that the equations shown here are an example of consecutive equation numbering; if the author had chosen to number equations starting with (1), (2), (3), etc., for each appendix, the copyeditor would have to renumber them (A1), (A2), (B1), (B2), etc.

Curve Fitting by Using Hill's Characteristic Equation
With reference to Eq. 1, the SSR is given by

where n is the number of data points in a set of F-V data. Curve fitting can be considered as searching for the combination of Fmax, a, and b that will give a minimal SSR.
To start a search, the input for Fmax, a, and b were 100-105% of Fmax at intervals of 1%, 50-200% at intervals of 4%, and 100-400% at intervals of 4%, respectively. These initial inputs for a and b were based on the results of the searches performed on several sets of data. In the subsequent rounds of search, the inputs for the Fmax remained the same. The inputs for a and b were plus and minus 50 of the respective values obtained in the previous round at intervals of 1%. A search would be terminated when the combinations obtained in two consecutive rounds of search were identical. In general, three to five rounds of search were required before the optimal combination was found.

Determination of the Relationship Between a Hill Constant and the Activation Level
Mathematically, a parabola (2nd-order polynomial) in a two-dimensional rectangular coordinate system (x-y plane) can be expressed as
|
|
(10) |
where (p, q) is the coordinate of the parabola's vertex and f is a constant related to the focus of the parabola. With reference to Fig. 4, a parabola passing through the data point for 100% AL (100, 59) is
|
|
(11) |
Rearranging the terms, we get
|
|
(12) |
Substituting Eq. 12 into Eq. 10, we have
|
|
(13) |
Therefore, a second-order polynomial passing through (100, 59) will have the form of Eq. 13.

Appendixes should be set off with the «app» code at the beginning of the appendix text, and the «/app» code at the end.
The label "Appendix" should be set as a level 1 heading, with the «h1» and «/h1» codes. Usually, the title of the appendix will follow as a level 2 heading.

«h2»Curve Fitting by Using Hill's Characteristic Equation«/h2»
Text of appendix follows....
If the entire appendix is a table (tabular appendix), the title of the table is the title of the appendix, set as a level 1 heading.
