A "note added in proof" is information added by the author at the proof stage, containing scientific comments that are relevant to the paper but were discovered after the paper was accepted for publication (usually as a result of some new findings that took place in the interim). See this article for an example.
If an author wants to add this kind of note at editing stage, he/she should be notified that the information will be incorporated into the text. This may require the copy editor to contact the Editor of the journal, since it may indicate a substantive change to the paper after its acceptance.NOTE ADDED IN PROOF (smallcap title) is placed directly after the main text and is followed by a 21-pica hairline rule separating it from the acknowledgments section. Type size is 9/10, and there is a space above and below the heading and the hairline rule.
