List Style

Lists may be either paragraph style or run in. Follow manuscript unless the list is very short and paragraph-indented, in which case it is okay to run it in.

Paragraph Style

List items are preceded with italic numerals followed by a single roman paren: 1), 2), 3). Do not use roman numerals or letters for lists. Do not add space above or below a list. Capitalize the first word of a list item after the paren. Paragraph-indent (1 em) each item on the list.

Run-in Style

Items are numbered the same as lists in paragraph style.

Use a colon to introduce the list; add "as follows" or "the following" if necessary. List items should begin with a lowercase letter and end with either a comma or a semicolon.

Use serial punctuation: precede the last item in a series with a comma and the word "and".

When one or more item in the list consists of more than one sentence, use a period to introduce the list. Begin each item with a capital letter and end each item with a period. It is not necessary to precede the last item with "and" in this case.

Using the Toolkit

For bulleted lists, if use the «bull» code to generate a bullet, and follow paragraph style. Bulleted lists are infrequently used by authors and should be avoided or converted to numbered lists if possible.
