The APS journal style does not require a specific single style for parenthetical information in text. However, copy editors should observe the following guidelines:
Avoid unnecessary editing. Accept the author's internal punctuation as long as it is clear and consistent. If it is not consistent, make it so using the style most prevalent in the paper. If in doubt, leave as is.
Avoid multiple double-fence situations; use semicolons or commas instead.
good
(1.0 ± 0.2 nS, means ± SE; n = 5)
bad
(n = 5)(Brown 1995)
Use "and" in series of words; however, in series of data the word "and" is not necessary.

(1.5 mm OD, 1.17 mm ID, length 20 cm)
Don't delete repeated words.
(n = 11 for 1-3 spikes; n = 5 for 4 spikes)
Order of fences, from innermost to outermost:
See the page on parentheses and brackets in the Mechanics of Style section for more information about the use of parentheses.
