Article Sections

Article sections are ordered as follows:

Most articles have an The introductory section between the abstract and the "Materials and Methods" section; however, this section should not be labeled. Delete the word "Introduction" if used by the author.

Exception

For articles in the Journal of Neurophysiology and Physiological Reviews, the introductory section is labeled "Introduction".

The last paragraph of the introductory section may state that the work was presented as part of a doctoral dissertation (the name of the author may be used).

The author must include a statement in "Methods" that the research protocol was approved by their Institutional Reveiw Board or equivalent, and that researchers followed guidelines for the humane use and care of animals, or that human subjects gave their informed consent. This statement may also be in the acknowledgments section.

For papers using microarray data, the author must provide a URL for the data deposit in the GEO database, to be located in the "Methods" section. Query the author if the URL is missing.

Using the Toolkit

The introductory section must begin with the «txt» code. The first 35 characters (or the first grammatically complete phrase, whichever is shorter) should be set in lowercase by the copyeditor; this will be converted to small caps by the printer. Use the «r» code to indicate where roman text should resume.

"Methods", "Results", and "Discussion" should be set as a level 1 headings at manuscript stage.
